What is Usher syndrome?

People who have Usher syndrome is deaf (profoundly or partially) from birth and then develop an eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP).

What is Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP)?

RP is a medical condition which affects the retina (at the back of the eye). The retina is like a film in a camera taking in light. However, with RP slowly deteriorates and is less able to send information to the brain.

People with RP, initially become nightblind and then lose side vision (having tunnel vision), but usually reading vision can remain reasonably good for many years.

How many people might have Usher syndrome?

Research so far has showed that there are for every 100 born Deaf people, 3 to 6 have Usher (3% to 6%).
