What is Usher syndrome? People who have Usher syndrome is deaf (profoundly or partially) from birth and then develop an eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). What is Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP)? RP is a medical condition which affects the retina (at the back of the eye). The retina is like a film in a camera taking in light. However, with RP slowly deteriorates and is less able to send information to the brain. People with RP, initially become nightblind and then lose side vision (having tunnel vision), but usually reading vision can remain reasonably good for many years. Go to Graphics version to view pictures of normal and RP vision.
It is difficult to give exact statistics, however, it is anticipated that for every 100 born Deaf and partially deaf people globally, 10 have Usher (10%)*. *Last recorded December 2007.
