- IWhat is Usher syndrome?
It is a genetic condition which combines deafness and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). More about RP here.
- What are the symptoms?
The five most common symptoms are:
• Vision: difficulties in seeing on the sides and up/down. It's like a tunnel vision. • Balance: not walking straight as if you're drunk. • Bright Light: when you come outside into the sun, your eyes hurt and that it takes a long time for your eyes to adjust. • Nightblindness: difficulties in seeing in the dark. • Accidents: you have accidents or are clumsy.
NOTE: There may be other eye conditions for any of these symptoms.
- How many types of Usher are there?
Three. See Types of Usher.
- Will I go blind?
RP is a progressive degeneration in the retina, so therefore your vision will gradually change during your life. However, it does vary individually as some may be able to see for many years, some may not.
