What A Cracker! Nick Sturley, London In 1994, Sarah Reed and I were over at Postsdam, formerly East Germany, for an Usher conference as we were giving a talk about Usher in the Deaf Community Project. After the three-day conference had finished, we already had planned to see Berlin for a day in the next day and to see the demolished Berlin Wall. A BSL interpreter was with us. it has been an interesting day at Berlin and we walked all the way across where the West and East Berlin wall used to be and Sarah and I have had a couple of “Oh dearie me” moments during that day, but an incident on the plane home seemed to have summed it all up. We both couldn’t stop laughing all the time during that day for no reason! We both were so tired and completely knackered. It’s been a long four days for us, you see? The conference nitty-gritty and the long sunny day in Berlin. We just want to go home and dive into our beds! During the flight home, we received our airline food tray with all those usual stuff cramped into one tray. After eating the main meal, there was a cracker biscuit and cheese, so I decided to have it. I buttered the cracker, cut the cheese and placed it on the cracker. Yummy and I took a nice bite...Yuk!! Oh dearie me! I got Sarah’s attention, who was sitting next to me, and showed the cracker/cheese to her. She burst out into a violent crying laughter, rocking the plane into turbulence and getting everyone’s attention. Embarrassed, she hid her face against the window to muffle her loud laughter. Guess what I did? I was so tired that I had completely forgotten to take out the cracker’s clear plastic wrapping! |
