A Fare Too Far

Linda Newnham, Surrey

On October of 1999, I went to Peterborough for the day with my comnunicator/guide at the Deafblind UK's Rainbow Centre at Peterbrough and also shopped round in which we had a lovely time.

We returned to East Croydon station in the evening and it was dark outside. My guide was concerned about me getting home, but I said I would be all right as I would get a taxi home in which I did. The taxi driver read my note with my address on it.

Along the journey, it seemed to go on forever as the driver seemed to drive a long way. He stopped three times during the way and I was getting nervous and worried because I could not see in the dark. Suddenly, my husband Richard opened the door and led me out. I was so relieved!

Richard asked the driver what was the fare and he said it was £19. He was surprised cos it was usually £7 from East Croydon station to home. The driver explained that he could not read my handwriting of my address in the note properly and therefore tried to find my house, stopping three times to read the map. I realised that I wrote the address in the train back which was a little wobbly!

I have to warn all Usher people, you MUST write your address as clearly as you can and save your taxi fare!
